In-Ground Fence Installation

Installing Electric Dog Fences may differ according to the brand you purchase. Working with the same intent of keeping pets on the property and off certain areas of your property all brands have common base rules for installations.

After purchase and at home, take time to bring out pieces of the fence system while consulting the manual for its use and location in the system.

Befor anything else, find the blue print of your lawn lay out. Sprinkler, outside light posts or other may be running below the ground. Make sure you plot around it or away from it. If underground wiring is not in use, disable it.

Pick out a safe spot for your electric fence transmitter. Make sure the location is accessible, protected from high or very low temperature and at least 3 ft from anything metal that mey cause sifnal interference. Never put it where it can be wet by rain, the space between a washing machine and an electrical source is out of the question and very dangerous.

Determine up to where your boundary is. Also include the off-zones within the area that need some wiring too. Off-zones are areas you can't allow your pet in: flower beds, garage/sheds (where poisonous substances are put), the pool area (prevent your pet from drowning) or the lawn fixtures.

Once you've plotted your wiring, measure the distance by steel tape and by the wire that comes with your purchase.

Wire starts at the mounted transmitter make a continous loop until the point where the looped wires are spread out to surround the area at oposite directions.

While measuring ad plotting, wiring at the corners must be in arcs and not angled corners. Angled corners caus a signal to break Always use gradual turns.

Check if all the materials needed to install is available. Buy the extras needed, like the wire. Be sure that it is all compatible and of the same capacity.

A test run of the wire lay out will be easier to correct if. Do this when wire is NOT buried yet.

Running a wire at a parallel path with other electrical wires or anttenaes may cause signal problems. Crossing these lines can be done perpendicularly at an angle of 90° NEVER parallel.

Plotting a layout on a lone off-zone in the middle of the safe area does not an independent connection. Twist the boundary wire 10-12 times per ft. to cancel the signal so your pet can cross over the safety area.

Extra wires must be connected with waterproofing material and cap. Make sure it is well protected. Most connection and signal breaks are due to faulty spliced wires.

Juice up the wires and calibrate the correction, distance and other settings needed at the transmitter prepare the receiver collar by installing the battery. Test the collar by:

  1. checking the lights per correction setting
  2. taking the collar out, positioned receiver doen at an angle or simulate the positin IF a dog were wearing it
  3. run near the boundary, does it give the appropriate warning sound or click?

Bring it near the boundary see results as indicated by the manual with the use of a tester that comes with most units.

Switch off the power on the boundary wire. Make the necessary lay out changes and then finally bury the wire.

Power it up once again, and prepare your flags and bring the receiver collar out (with the tester on the prongs).

Test the collar signal for warning and correction. Put flags at the warning zone, don't hesitate to use all flag markers this is also for visual training of your dog about repect for the boundary.

Next, REMOVE the battery from the receiver collar. Properly put the collar on your pet, fixing it for a comfortable fit and proper contact of prongs for correction.

Prepare your pet with proper training before activating the electric fence system.

Training does not get done the same day you install the electric fence. Use and power up the fence only when proper training is done. Be patient with your dog, and get rid of the excitement it will interfere with the dog's training.

A high percentage of improper use and abuse of the pet and fence are reportedly done by impatient clients. For your pet's sake, everything must run well before juicing up the boundary fence.

To effectively enable the electric dog fence precise planning and plotting, proper installation, trial and trouble shooting (IF needed) is done. This ensures your pet's safety and your peace of mind.
